William, known to most in the wrestling world by his middle name Nigel, has served as a registered Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) and USA Wrestling Kansas official for over 2 decades now.
Prior to beginning his officiating career he wrestled competitively for 10 years with the Abilene Kids Wrestling Club (AKWC) and the powerhouse teams of Abilene High School in Abilene Kansas, winning two team state championships to go along with his individual success. After graduating, he went on to spend 2 years helping coach with AKWC. At that time he decided he wanted to go a different route while still staying involved with the sport he loves so much. His step-father Tom had been a KSHSAA official for 30 years, so he thought he would try that out. Officiating really came naturally to him, and for the next 20+ years he would hone his craft and work hard each season to become the best official he could be. Along the way he would be chosen to work the KSHSAA State Championships in various different classes starting in his 5 year and continuing every since. In addition, he has worked the USAWKS State Championships each year as well, to go along with being invited and traveling all over the country to work National tournaments.
Now serving as the owner and head clinician for RefRight Academy, the idea and desire to help recruit, train, and mentor officials is something he wanted to do for a very long time. It is his belief that if the sport of wrestling wants to keep functioning with high quality and knowledgeable officials, the best thing to do is to put opportunities out there for those looking to potentially get into officiating. Whether it is serving and teaching clinics, or evaluating other officials at their request, you will see him all over and many events in any given season, working, helping, and generally just having a great time doing what he loves.
